Learn to type, best and most efficient way?

learn to type
Melody asked:

I have worked by myself for so long I never really noticed how bad my habit of the hunt and peck typing had become. I’m really fast, but it is now embarrassing.
Anyone know of a good program to teach an older person how to learn how to type the CORRECT WAY?

  1. i was smart enough to take a class when i was in 9th grade. this was some years before home computers hit the market. i learned using a mechanical typewriter. just practice. it’s merely training your fingers to know where the keys are. you don’t need to waste money on any special “programs”

all you need to know to get started is the “home” position for your fingers and which keys each should access. then you can make up your own exercises.

  5. You can do it yourself by memorising the keys and putting your fingers at the starting point of A-F then the other hand on J-: use thumbs for the space bar and shift keys. It will be weird at first but you will get it in no time.

  7. well it took me awhile to start typing pretty fast. and still i need to work on it a bit! well im in junior high, but i used mavis beacon, and it helped alot. u might be more embaressed if you start using it, but it helps. also try typing in the Home Keys. Ilearned this in computer class, so whenever i start typing its on this one section of the keyboard called the home keys. the left hand fingers are on a, s, d, f. the right hand fingering is on j, k, l, ;. you put your fingers up and down to press the keys around it! Home Keys help SOOOOOOO much! It really helped me, and now im fastest in the class, cause im the only student who listened to our computer teacher’s advise. hehehe

  8. I used Mavis Beacon - it’s a bit childish but it does work. Any learn to type program will do. It does take a while if you’re used to the one finger method, but give it a couple of months you’ll be fine!

  9. Personally, I learned by just typing. I used Mavis Beacon for a few weeks when I was young but I found it didn’t really help. I just kept ‘peck typing’ and that helped me remember where the letters are on the keyboard. Just try typing, if you watch your ‘peck typing’, you might notice that your hand will go to the direction the letter is in even if you have to look to see the exact spot it’s in. Also, try to ‘peck type’ by only looking at the screen. That will also help you remember. If this won’t work, just use any ‘Learn to Type’ program. Hope I helped!
